In a landmark move for environmental education, Hon. Yacqwub Mohamed Siyaad has launched Djibouti’s first Climate Education Curriculum, to be integrated into primary and secondary schools starting in the 2025–2027 academic year.
Developed jointly with the Ministry of Education, the curriculum introduces students to topics such as climate science, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and water conservation.
“Educating our children about the environment is the most powerful long-term investment we can make,” said the Deputy Minister. “Knowledge transforms awareness into action, and action into national progress.”
The pilot phase will train 600 teachers and reach more than 45,000 students. The project is supported by UNESCO and the Djibouti Teachers’ Training Institute, and forms part of the National Green Knowledge Initiative launched earlier this year.
