The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Republic of Djibouti has officially launched the National Environmental Awareness Campaign 2025, a countrywide initiative designed to strengthen environmental consciousness, civic responsibility, and climate resilience among citizens of all ages.
The campaign, spearheaded by Hon. Yacqwub Mohamed Siyaad, Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, seeks to bridge the gap between national environmental policy and public participation. Through school programs, community outreach, and digital media engagement, the initiative aims to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship across Djibouti’s regions.
“True environmental progress is not achieved in conference rooms; it begins in the hearts and minds of our citizens,” stated Hon. Yacqwub Mohamed Siyaad at the launch ceremony held at the People’s Palace in Djibouti City. “Our mission is to ensure that every individual — from the student to the shopkeeper, from the pastoralist to the policymaker — understands their role in protecting our shared home.”
The program’s activities will include nationwide clean-up drives, school environmental clubs, radio talk shows, and capacity-building workshops for local government officials. Over 15,000 participants are expected to take part during the first six months.
In partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the campaign will also deliver a specialized training module on waste management and plastic reduction for municipal staff in Djibouti City, Tadjourah, and Dikhil. A new online platform — GreenDjibouti.gov.dj — will serve as a hub for environmental education materials, event updates, and volunteer registration.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that the campaign forms a critical part of Djibouti’s National Climate Resilience Strategy, adopted in 2025, which emphasizes inclusive action and environmental accountability.
“Sustainability is a shared responsibility,” he continued. “The success of our policies depends on how deeply they are understood and embraced by our people. We are transforming environmental protection from a government directive into a public movement.”
Representatives from civil society, youth organizations, and the private sector attended the launch, expressing support for a national platform that empowers citizens to participate directly in environmental restoration.
The campaign will run through 2025 under the theme “My Country, My Climate, My Responsibility.” It reflects Djibouti’s broader commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 15 (Life on Land), ensuring that public engagement remains central to the nation’s environmental transformation.
