The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, led by Deputy Minister Hon. Yacqwub Mohamed Siyaad, has launched the second phase of the National Tree-Planting and Landscape Restoration Drive, targeting the rehabilitation of degraded arid lands in southern Djibouti.
Over 1.5 million drought-resistant seedlings — including acacia, neem, and moringa — will be planted across five regions, with strong community participation.
“Land restoration is the foundation of our national resilience,” said Hon. Yacqwub Mohamed Siyaad at the Ali Sabieh ceremony. “By greening our drylands, we are fighting desertification, improving soil health, and creating livelihood opportunities for rural families.”
The program employs local youth groups for nursery development and tree maintenance, ensuring sustainability and job creation. Supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and FAO, the initiative will rehabilitate more than 2,000 hectares by the end of 2025.
